The Rays Baseball Foundation awarded a total of $150,000 to three local nonprofit organizations through the club's 2010 All-Star Grant Program. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Suncoast received a $25,000 grant. Girls Inc. and Devereux Kids each received a $60,000 grant.
The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Suncoast is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships with measureable impact. The Rays Baseball Foundation grant will allow them to promote their Sports Buddies program. Sports Buddies is a one to one mentoring program targeting volunteer mentors with an interest in sports. The Rays Baseball Foundation has supported the program with Big Brothers Big Sisters Tampa Bay and Big Brothers Big Sisters Pinellas, Hernando and Citrus.
The mission of Girls Inc. is to inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold. The Rays Baseball Foundation grant will support their All Star Sports Program. This program will run at their Lakeland, Sarasota, and Pinellas sites. Funds will help to hire coaches for after school programs and purchase necessary equipment. The All Star Sports Program will promote team building, fitness training and athletic activities to develop girls' sense of personal power and growth.
Devereux Kids is a prevention program established to involve parents and community residents in training, relationship building and skill development to increase the safety and well being of children, youth and families at the neighborhood level. The Rays Baseball Foundation grant will support the Devereux Kids program in Sulphur Springs (Tampa) and will fund materials and staff for after school and weekend programs aimed at reaching youth in the area.
The Rays Community Fund Grant Program provides assistance to local non-profit organizations in the Tampa Bay Region. The grant supports current youth and/or education programs offered by community-based non-profit organizations. Below are the 2010 Community Fund Grant Recipients:
The Alpha House of Tampa is a homeless program for women who are pregnant or parenting and in crisis. The grant awarded to The Alpha House of Tampa will go towards their "Teen Book Club" program aimed at advancing literacy and inspiring teens. With the support of the $5,000 grant from the Rays Baseball Foundation, the program will be able to purchase over 160 books as well as journals, dictionaries, thesauruses, pens and a tote bag for the participants as well as food for each book club meeting.
The Boys and Girls Club of the Suncoast will receive a community fund grant from the Rays Baseball Foundation to support their "Read to Succeed" summer program for 200 children ages 5-12. The goal of the program is to encourage at risk students to improve their reading skills to the point where they can succeed in school and develop necessary reading skills that will prepare them for high school and post secondary education. The grant, in the amount of $5,000, will provide scholarships for ten youth to participate in this fun, educational summer camp.
The Boys and Girls Club of Charlotte County will provide out-of-school learning opportunities for at-risk youth ages 6-18 years old through "Project Learn." The community fund grant from the Rays Baseball Foundation will help enhance homework help and tutoring, high-yield learning, parent involvement, and collaboration with schools and incentives. The $5,000 grant will go towards total operating expenses for the "Project Learn" program.
Brookwood Florida-Central, Inc. provides troubled adolescent girls with an alternative living environment and therapeutic program encompassing education, employability skills, independent living training and counseling that will prepare them for the self-sufficiency or a successful family reunification. The $5,000 community fund grant awarded to Brookwood by the Rays Baseball Foundation will enable their 2010 Summer recreational activities for foster teens which will compliment their educational pursuits and job preparedness training.
The Children's Home has healed young lives traumatized by abuse, neglect, and abandonment and has evolved since 1892 from a humble orphanage to a major component of the child welfare system and has served a total of 25,000 children. The $5,000 grant from the Rays Baseball Foundation will help support their "Take Me out to the Ball Game" Program. Through this program, the children will be able to attend 12 Rays baseball games and enjoy fun, positive, and memorable experiences.
Clothes to Kids provides new and quality used clothing to low-income, school age children in Pinellas County so that they can attend school with the confidence and self-esteem needed to achieve academic success. $5,000 from the Rays Baseball Foundation will provide wardrobes for 100 financially disadvantaged school children for the back to school season.
Computer Mentors Group provides computer training for disadvantaged inner-city youths and establishes a network of computer professionals to serve as their mentors. The Rays Baseball Foundation will award $5,000 to help support their Youth Computer Training Program which provides students with technical knowledge and experience in computer science.
Eckerd Youth Alternatives is one of the nation's leading providers of services for vulnerable and at-risk youth and their families and aims to ensure that every child has the opportunity to succeed. The Rays Baseball Foundation's grant of $5,000 will fund their "Success Awards" scholarships program which supports the educational and vocational pursuits of low-income students.
The Hillsborough Head Start Community Foundation, Inc., a program for young children with disabilities and special needs, will receive a $5,000 community fund grant from the Rays Baseball Foundation for "Jonathan's Toy Lending Library." The program will support nearly 350 infants and and preschool aged children to put resources and toys into the hands of children and families who wouldn't otherwise have access to them.
Mt. Zion Human Services is a non-profit organization that aims to help children, individuals, and families overcome their material circumstances to achieve their fullest potential. Through the Rays Baseball Foundation community fund grant of $5,000, Mt. Zion Human Services will be able to fund their 2010 Summer "Camp Adventure" which promotes youth character and leadership development.
Pinellas County Urban League aims to assist low-income African Americans and others in need in the achievement of social and economic equality. The community fund grant of $5,000 from the Rays Baseball Foundation will support "Operation SMART," (Students Motivational and Readiness Training), a summer school designed to reinforce developmental academic skills, as well as provide readiness and training to students to help them for grade advancement.
The Police Athletic League of Tampa provides year round youth programs to over 500 inner-city children of low to moderate income, ranging in age from 5-15. During the past 50 years, PAL has continuously reached out to children at risk by providing them with a positive alternative to crime through supervised athletic, recreational, and educational programs. The Police Athletic League of Tampa will receive $5,000 from the Rays Baseball Foundation to support their youth athletic programs.
R'Club Child Care, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides child care to over 3,100 children from low-income families at 39 centers in Pinellas County and one in Hillsborough County. The community fund grant of $5,000 will go toward scholarships to help financially challenges working families pay for childcare for their infants, toddlers, and preschoolers at R'Club Early Learning Academy in St. Petersburg.
The Spring of Tampa Bay, Inc., an organization that has provided sanctuary and services to more than 50,000 abused adults and their children in Hillsborough County, will be receiving a $5,000 grant to help with their nutrition and play therapy program aimed at helping children build coping skills.
The YMCA of the Suncoast will receive a $5,000 grant from the Rays Baseball Foundation for their "Rays Swing into Summer" program. This program will provide 20 middle school age youth with a full day of engaging programs for 9 weeks during the 2010 summer break. The goal of the program is to challenge youth to grow as individuals and bridge the learning gap between June and August.
