Rays Teaming Up for the Environment

As part of the Tampa Bay Rays Teaming Up for the Environment Initiative launched in 2008, the Rays Baseball Foundation and partner Waste Management, Inc. of Florida awarded grants to seven organizations that support environmental education programs in the Tampa Bay area.

Organizations receiving these grants are:

  • Camp Bayou Outdoor Learning Center in Hillsborough County, District School
  • Board of Pasco County
  • Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful, Inc.
  • Mayor's Beautification Program in Tampa
  • Sulphur Springs Elementary School in Tampa
  • Suncoast Earth Force in St. Petersburg
  • Tampa Bay Watch, Inc. in St. Petersburg

The Rays and Waste Management awarded each organization a $1,500 grant and recognized them at a Rays home game.

"The Rays continue to strive to make a positive impact on our environment through practices that promote energy and water conservation and that reduce, reuse and recycle waste," said Rays Vice President, Development Melanie Lenz. "We are pleased to be 'Teaming Up' with these community partners that support the environment through educational programs and initiatives and look forward to raising awareness about their activities throughout the season." "Partnerships like these help encourage the Tampa Bay community to become environmental stewards," said Waste Management Senior District Manager Rick Kania. "Waste Management is excited to partner with the Tampa Bay Rays and these selected organizations that share our company's Think GreenĀ® values and commitment to protecting our natural resources."

Teaming Up for the Environment is the Rays extensive sustainable business program that focuses on shifting to non-toxic, recycled and remanufactured supplies and materials; preventing, reducing, reusing and recycling the waste we create; minimizing energy and water usage by employing both straightforward and innovative conservation practices; institutionalizing sustainability as a corporate value; and becoming a community leader in environmental stewardship.
