Very Important Pirate (VIP) Party

Pirates and Pirates Charities Chairman Bob Nutting hosted a VIP (Very Important Pirate) Party on May 13 for children from the Highmark Caring Place. That day the group came to PNC Park as his special guests and watched the Pirates-Brewers game from a luxury suite. Nutting will host a VIP Party each month during the baseball season, providing a trip to the ballpark in true VIP-style, complete with a private meet-and-greet with Pirates players and coaches, a Pirates replica jersey and a VIP goodie bag for each child. Each party also includes the opportunity to participate in a pre-game ceremony and enjoy great ballpark food provided by Levy Restaurants. The Highmark Caring Place champions the cause of grieving children by creating awareness of their needs, providing programs for them and their families, and encouraging community support.

Kurt Weiss Scholarship Awards Night

Pirates Charities welcomed 23 former Make-A-Wish kids to PNC Park for the Kurt Weiss Scholarship Awards Night on May 17. The opportunity to earn a scholarship is offered to any wish kid who is a senior in high school and intends to pursue post-secondary education. It's named in honor of Kurt Weiss, a former wish kid who now practices medicine in the Pittsburgh area. Weiss was present to help recognize the students' accomplishments as was Judi Stone, the president and CEO of Make-A-Wish of Greater Pennsylvania and Southern West Virginia, and Pirates President Frank Coonelly. The students who earned scholarships were honored on the field prior to the Pirates-Astros game.

"Take The Fort To School"

Pirates catcher Michael McKenry visited with fifth grade students at St. Sylvester School in the South Hills on May 21 as part of the Pirates and Trib Total Media "Take The Fort To School" promotion. "The Fort" -- as McKenry is affectionately known -- met with the winner of the promotion, 10-year-old Bailey Golvash at the morning event. He toured the school with her and participated in a meet-and-greet with her family and classmates. In addition, McKenry delivered Pirates promotional items and discussed the importance of education. Parents in the Pittsburgh area had the opportunity to enter their child's school in the "Take The Fort To School" contest between March 31 and May 6, and Golvash was chosen randomly from more than 3,000 entries as the lucky winner.

The 8th annual Pirates Charities Golf Classic presented by WPAHS will take place on Thursday, July 11 at the Fox Chapel Golf Club.
