ST. PETERSBURG -- Joe Maddon lost a challenge on a close call in the fourth inning of Monday afternoon's Mariners-Rays contest at Tropicana Field.
With two outs, Desmond Jennings hit a chopper up the middle over the head of pitcher Erasmo Ramirez. Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano ranged to his right, fielded the ball and made a quick throw to first for the third out. Maddon did not see the play in the same light as first-base umpire Tim Timmons, however, and the Rays' manager issued a challenge.
After a review that lasted one minute and 35 seconds, the umpires announced that the ruling on the field would stand.
The Rays have made 21 challenges this season. Six have been overturned, seven have stood and eight have been confirmed.
