Rays option Sonnanstine, recall Guyer
By Bill Chastain / MLB.com
"We want Sonnie to get more time to pitch," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "In the first half of the season, he started for us a bit. And since then, it's been difficult to get him usage. So we're going to send him back and get him working again. And for tomorrow, we're going to bring up Brandon Guyer, which permits us to have another right-handed bat against CC Sabathia."
Sonnanstine was 0-2 with a 5.71 ERA in 14 games for the Rays this season, four of which were starts. He last appeared in a game on June 27, during a one-inning stint against the Reds. He will not report to Durham until after the All-Star break. He will be used as a starter and, according to Maddon, could make his first start for the Bulls as early as Thursday.
Guyer will be making his second tour of duty with the Rays this season. He hit a big three-run homer against the Orioles in the one game he played in for the Rays. He was hitting .318, with 10 home runs and 47 RBIs for the Bulls.
"He did a nice little cameo in Baltimore versus Zach Britton," Maddon said. "I mean, this guy Sabathia is good against righties and lefties. This way, it will allow us to stack our lineup [with right-handed hitters]. The only lefty in our lineup is going to be [Casey Kotchman]."
