Longoria pleased to be back on field

ST. PETERSBURG -- Evan Longoria (left-oblique strain) is in the final stages of his comeback. Thursday, while playing for Double-A Montgomery in his first game since April 2, he had a good showing.

Longoria hit a home run in the Biscuits' 4-3 win over Jacksonville. The Rays third baseman expressed his pleasure at returning to the field.

"Just to feel the energy from the guys and to lace up the cleats," Longoria told the Montgomery Advertiser. "It was a fun day."

Rays manager Joe Maddon got a good report on Longoria's first game back.

"I heard good at-bats, hit the ball well, made a good play on defense, felt really well, there was no negative feedback at all," Maddon said. "The home run was properly struck to left-center. He had a pretty good day."

Longoria is expected to return to the Rays on Tuesday after spending the weekend with the Biscuits.
