Shoppach exits game with knee soreness

He left the game after getting injured in the bottom of the seventh. Rays reliever Joel Peralta had thrown wildly to home with one out, prompting Chicago's Brent Morel to try to score from third on the play. Shoppach chased the ball and quickly turned to make a snap throw to Peralta, who covered the plate to get the sliding Morel for the second out of the inning.
Shoppach came up limping and John Jaso took over at catcher.
The Rays catcher is listed as day to day, but Rays manager Joe Maddon sounded optimistic about Shoppach returning to duty.
"I just talked to him and he said he was fine," Maddon said. "It scared him a little bit. It was kind of an awkward feeling. ... When it's a knee and you're the catcher, I'm always concerned.
"I wanted to get him out at that point. He did not want to come out. But I thought it was the right thing to do and he's standing on his own out there. I think he's going to be fine. He thinks he's going to actually be able to play [Saturday] if we need him."
