Bartlett placed on DL; Rays add Shoppach

Bartlett, who was showing signs of improvement, will be placed on the DL retroactive to Saturday, when he strained his right hamstring while chasing a hit up the middle.
"That was based on the progress I've been making," Bartlett said. "I think they just decided get this thing 100 percent better. ... It's getting better, but by no means could I go out there and play my game that I play every day."
Bartlett expects to be back with the team and in the starting lineup when the Rays open a three-game series against the Braves in Atlanta on June 15.
Shoppach flew to Dallas on Friday morning and started Friday night's game at catcher.
"It's always nice to be where you're supposed to be and have the chance to do the things you're supposed to do," said Shoppach of his return. "It's definitely been a tough few weeks watching these guys go about and not having the chance to be a fully a part of it."
Shoppach, who underwent knee surgery on April 19 and started a rehab assignment on May 31, was scheduled to play seven games for the Bulls, but he played in four games and went 4-for-13 with a pair of RBIs before getting the call to join the team. He played four games for the Rays earlier this season, going 2-for-8 before injuring his knee during a home-plate collision on April 10 against the Yankees.
Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said he did not want to enter the series against Texas a player short. Now the Rays enter the three-game series with three catchers on their roster in John Jaso, Dioner Navarro and Shoppach.
