Maddon set to get married

Rays manager headed to California after World Series season

ST. PETERSBURG -- The bulk of celebrations for the American League-champion Rays team may be over, but for manager Joe Maddon life will continue to be "one big party" for a while longer.

Complete Coverage

Following an appearance at Friday's rays rally in downtown St. Petersburg, Maddon will fly to California on Saturday night in preparation for his wedding in Fullerton the following Saturday. The event, which Maddon described as "more nerve-wracking" than any part of the Rays' season, will see the third-year skipper wed fiancee, Jaye Sousoures.

The couple will then bounce around Europe on their honeymoon before hosting a second reception on the East Coast, in Maddon's home state of Pennsylvania. That event, which likely will come after Christmas, was done because Maddon didn't want to burden his family and friends with the costly cross-country expenses.

As for his own trip to the West Coast, Maddon had originally wanted leave following Friday's rally but he couldn't get a nonstop flight until Saturday.

Fortunately, Sousoures has handled all the wedding arrangements and Maddon -- who is well known for his strategic baseball style -- wouldn't dare second-guess his fiancee.

"She's meticulous in her planning, really well-organized," he said. "I anticipate a flawless November 8."

Maddon is also anticipating a chance to see Europe and travel in a "very simple" manner.

"The old backpack routine -- some layers, some sweaters, [and] a Eurail pass," he said of his honeymoon plans. "Nice hotels, though. We'll stay in nice hotels. A lot of wine, some good food. Check out the old churches."
