Rays undecided on starter for twin bill

Price, Talbot are candidates to start Game 2 on Tuesday

ST. PETERSBURG -- Rays manager Joe Maddon hasn't yet decided who will start Game 2 of Tuesday's twi-night doubleheader in Baltimore.

Because the Rays have no off-days during the final week of the season, they will have to call on a starter outside of the regular rotation, and the speculation about who that starter might be is top prospect David Price.

Price made his Major League debut in an extended relief stint Sunday against the Yankees, and he pitched again in relief on Thursday against the Twins.

"I haven't [decided] yet," Maddon said. "Of course, it could be David, or [Mitch] Talbot. I really liked what [Jeff] Niemann did out of the bullpen [Friday] night. That's kind of an interesting concept. I've never seen him throw like that. I don't think anybody has. Not only the velocity, but the angle and everything else. And his confidence, it was really fun to watch. It still could be him, also -- I'm not saying it won't, but more than likely it's going to be going to be David or Mitch. We haven't decided yet."

Maddon smiled when a reporter noted that he had some nice candidates to choose from to make his decision.

"We have options," Maddon added. "We'll just see how this all plays out. I'm really focussed on today pretty much, so I don't have a solid answer for you yet."

Price said he would be ready to start if given the opportunity.
