'TWIB' to feature top Draft pick Price
Zimmer, Martinez among those to discuss Rays' No. 1 choice
By Dawn Klemish / MLB.com
At the Draft, the show caught up with Rays special adviser Don Zimmer and Dave Martinez, one of the original Rays, to get an inside look at what Price will bring to the Rays. "This Week in Baseball" also sat down with Price himself to talk about his past, his big day and his future with the Tampa Bay organization. It seemed as though Price, a charismatic 21-year-old southpaw pitcher out of Vanderbilt, was eager to begin his professional career.
"This Week in Baseball" producer Allison Potocki said the interaction was a very promising one.
"The Rays hope for him to do very well in the future, and hope that in the very near future, he'll be playing in the big leagues," she said.
The show also took an inside look at the Milwaukee Brewers' surprise pick -- Matt LaPorta, a power hitter from Florida who was chosen seventh overall. Featured on the segment is an interview with Gord Ash, the Brewers' assistant general manager, including why Milwaukee took a chance on LaPorta.
The Draft is also discussed in a broader scope, with highlights throughout history regarding top picks, dark horses and where the career of each ended up, such as Mike Piazza, who was selected by the Dodgers in the 62nd round in 1988, and then went on to be a 12-time All-Star and potential future Hall of Famer.
Actor Tom Cavanagh is showcased during the Front-Row Fan portion of the program, which delves into the sports world of Cavanagh, an avid baseball fan raised in Canada.
Cavanagh has made several cameos on the comedy series "Scrubs," and most recently starred as hospital patient George Grieves in the thriller flick "Sublime."
Baseball is more popular in Canada than one would think, said Cavanagh, who shares his favorite moments as a Blue Jays fan.
For this week's The Pepsi Piece, TWIB takes a look at overall No. 1 Draft picks and the historical moments they've had while playing in the Major Leagues.
"This Week in Baseball" airs throughout the week on Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN), SportsTime Ohio (STO) and Comcast SportsNet West.
