ST. PETERSBURG -- The Tampa Bay Rays have named their Minor League coordinators and on-field coaching staffs for the 2009 season. Joining the organization are two new coaches, Dave Myers and Dan DeMent, and three trainers, Lee Slagle, Andrew Hauser and Jorge Vargas. The Rays appointed two first-time managers in Brady Williams (Hudson Valley) and Jared Sandberg (Princeton), both of whom previously played in the Rays organization.

Jim Hoff returns to his post as Minor League Field Coordinator for an eighth straight season. Joining Hoff's staff will be Rehabilitation and Athletic Training Coordinator Joel Smith, who has served the last five years as a trainer in the Rays organization and spent 2008 with Montgomery (AA). Hitting Coordinator Steve Livesey returns to Hoff's staff for a fourth year, Pitching Coordinator Dick Bosman and Outfield/Baserunning Coordinator Skeeter Barnes each return for a third season, and Catching Coordinator Jamie Nelson will return for a second year. Medical Training Coordinator Mark Vinson returns to his post for a second season and his fourth with the Rays. Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Trung Cao is entering his fourth season in his role. Tim McKechney will serve as Minor League Equipment Manager for a seventh year, and Shane Rossetti returns for his second season as Assistant Equipment Manager.

Several other coaches will move into new positions to complete the on-field staffs.

The Durham Bulls (AAA) welcome back Manager Charlie Montoyo for a third season and his fourth managing in the Rays organization. Coach Dave Myers joins the Bulls after working in the same capacity the last two seasons with Buffalo (AAA) in the Cleveland Indians organization. Prior to that Myers spent 19 years coaching and managing in the Seattle Mariners system, including four years (2001-04) as the third base and infield coach at the major league level. A 13th-round selection by the Mariners in the 1981 June Draft, Myers played eight Minor League seasons with Seattle and was invited to major league spring training camp in 1988. Pitching Coach Xavier Hernandez is back for a third campaign with Durham and his eighth in the Rays system. Making the move from Vero Beach (A), Rodger Fleming was named the trainer and enters his second year with the Rays.

The Montgomery Biscuits (AA) bring back Manager Billy Gardner, Jr. for a third season. Tampa native and former Rays outfielder Ozzie Timmons will coach for Montgomery after filling the same role for Columbus (A) in 2008. Pitching Coach Neil Allen returns for a third season with the Biscuits. Trainer Lee Slagle joins the Rays organization from the Texas Rangers organization, where he spent the last three years as trainer for Oklahoma (AAA). Prior to his time with the Rangers, he worked in the minors with the Indians and Boston Red Sox.

The inaugural Charlotte Stone Crabs (A) of the Florida State League, entering their first season as a Rays affiliate after relocating from Vero Beach, will be managed by Jim Morrison. The Bradenton, Fla., resident managed Vero Beach in 2008 and enters his third season managing in the Rays organization. Pitching Coach Bill Moloney joins Charlotte after serving in the same capacity for Columbus (A) the last two years. Coach Joe Szekely, who managed Princeton last year, will begin his fifth season with the Rays. Chris Tomashoff will take over as trainer after spending the last three years as Assistant Athletic Training Coordinator on Hoff's staff.

The Princeton Rays (Rookie) will be managed by former Rays infielder Jared Sandberg, who begins his first season of managing. He becomes the first person to land a managing position in the Rays organization after playing in the majors for the Rays. Sandberg, 30, won the Appalachian League MVP in 1997 while playing for Princeton. He began his coaching career in 2008 with Hudson Valley and is the nephew of Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg.

Sandberg will be joined by another former P-Ray, Coach Dan DeMent, who begins his first professional coaching position. The former infielder signed with the Rays as an undrafted free agent in 2000 and that year made his professional debut with Princeton and was named to the Appalachian League All-Star Team. Marty DeMerritt returns as Pitching Coach for his third year with Princeton and ninth in the organization. Coach Rafael Deleon is also back with Princeton for a fourth season and his 14th with the Rays. Trainer Andrew Hauser joins the Rays organization from the Philadelphia Phillies chain, where he served as Strength and Conditioning Coach for Clearwater (A) in 2008.

The Gulf Coast League Rays (Rookie), a new affiliate that will play at the Rays training facility in Charlotte County, will be managed by Joe Alvarez. Alvarez joined the Rays organization in 2008 as the manager for Hudson Valley. Darwin Peguero will serve as the Pitching Coach in his first stateside coaching assignment, having spent the last three years as the Dominican Summer League Rays Pitching Coach. Coach Ben Oglivie begins his third year in the Rays system after coaching at Montgomery in 2008. Reinaldo Ruiz joins the GCL staff after coaching the Venezuelan Summer League Rays for the last two years. Jorge Vargas, who earned his Master's in athletic training from Seton Hall University, has been named the trainer and will begin his first full-time job in professional baseball. The GCL Rays also existed from 1996-98 and played at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg.
