With just a few days left in the 2014 MLB All-Star voting, Evan Longoria needs a major push to become the American League starter at the hot corner.

Longoria moved up one spot among AL third basemen in the voting this week, from fourth to third, overtaking Baltimore's Manny Machado. But the Rays' third baseman, with 1,457,752 votes, still trails leading vote-getter Josh Donaldson of the A's (2,943,332 votes) by a large margin, as well as the Rangers' Adrian Beltre (1,730,748 votes).

Longoria, who has played every game for the Rays this season and was batting .264 with 10 home runs and 37 RBIs entering Monday, is the only Rays player to rank in the Top 5 at his position in the voting or the Top 15 in the outfield (a list from which three players will be chosen).

Longoria is a three-time All-Star -- he was twice elected a starter by the fans (2009, '10), and won the AL Final Vote in '08, his rookie season with the Rays.

Last year, the Rays were represented by left-hander Matt Moore, who is on the disabled list after Tommy John surgery, and Ben Zobrist, who filled a nice niche for the AL team, given his ability to play several positions well.

This season, the Rays have two deserving All-Star candidates on the mound -- starter David Price and reliever Jake McGee -- but fans do not elect the All-Star pitchers. Price leads the Major Leagues in strikeouts and strikeout-to-walk ratio, and he is on a run of five straight double-digit strikeout games. McGee has been lights-out in the bullpen -- the lefty had a 1.27 ERA entering Monday and 35 of his 38 outings have been scoreless.
