OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland Athletics have acquired minor league outfielder Billy Burns from the Washington Nationals in exchange for left-handed pitcher Jerry Blevins, the team announced today.
Burns was named the Nationals Minor League Player of the Year in 2013 after batting .315 with no home runs and 37 RBI in 121 games between Single-A Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg. Burns, 24, also recorded 74 stolen bases, added 72 walks en route to a .425 on-base percentage and was selected to the Carolina League's Postseason All-Star team. The switch-hitter was selected by Washington in the 32nd round of the 2011 draft out of Mercer University.
Blevins completed his seventh season with the A's in 2013 and was 5-0 with a 3.15 ERA and .218 opponents batting average in a career-high 67 games. He is 13-6 with a 3.30 ERA in 281 career appearances, all with the A's. The appearances are tied for sixth most on the Oakland career list.
