Lagares wins NL Player of Week honors
Mets outfielder tied for Major League best in hits, tied for third with five RBIs
Juan Lagares' blistering start to the second half has earned the Mets rookie his first career National League Player of the Week honors.
Lagares won the award for the abbreviated week coming out of the All-Star break by going 7-for-10 (.700) in the Mets' weekend series against the Phillies. The seven hits tied for a Major League best, while Lagares also ranked second in the NL in slugging percentage (1.200) and tied for third with five RBIs. He also pitched in two doubles and a home run in the three-game set.
His impressive second-half start commenced on Friday with a 2-for-3 performance, including a double, an RBI and a run scored in a 13-8 loss. Lagares then tied a career high with three hits on Saturday, contributing another double and an RBI, in a 5-4 victory. The 24-year-old posted a third straight multihit game on Sunday, going 2-for-3 with a home run and a career-high-tying three RBIs.
Lagares' strong weekend showing raised his season average to .265, including .412 (14-for-34) in the month of July.
