Rangers recall LHP Joseph Ortiz and C Robinson Chirinos; place INF/OF Jeff Baker on disabled list; option 1B Chris McGuiness
Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has made the following four roster moves prior to tonight's game against Oakland:
- Recalled LHP Joseph Ortiz (#58) from Triple-A Round Rock
- Recalled C Robinson Chirinos (#61) from Triple-A Round Rock
- Placed INF/OF Jeff Baker on 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 13, with a sprained right thumb
- Optioned 1B Chris McGuiness to Triple-A Round Rock
Ortiz, 22, will be in his second stint with Texas, as he was also on the club from Opening Day until he was optioned on June 5 when Alexi Ogando was activated from the disabled list. Ortiz has gone 2-1 with a 5.13 ERA (15 ER/26.1 IP) over 20 appearances with Texas this season in his first big league action. He has allowed runs in each of his last 4 outings with the Rangers. He has made 4 appearances with Round Rock, going 1-0 with a 2.35 ERA (2 ER/7.2 IP), issuing one walk against 13 strikeouts. His last outing was Sunday at Oklahoma City (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 17 pitches/14 strikes).
Chirinos, 29, had another stint with the Rangers from May 10-20. He batted .250 (3-12) with 2 doubles in 3 games/starts for Texas, his first major league action since 2011. Chirinos was acquired in a trade with Tampa Bay on April 8 and has spent the balance of the season with Round Rock, batting .290 (47-162) with 5 home runs, 8 doubles, 25 RBI, and 25 runs in 46 games. He has seen action at catcher, third base, and first base for the Express, as well as time at designated hitter.
Baker has batted .317 (26-82) with 9 home runs and 16 RBI in 37 games/23 starts for Texas this season. His last game was a start on June 12 vs. Cleveland, and the first date he would be eligible to return to the active roster is June 28.
McGuiness had his contract purchased from Round Rock on June 6 and batted .176 (6-34) with a double and RBI in 10 games/9 starts for Texas in his major league debut.
With today's moves, the Rangers still have a full 40-man roster.
