Pestano headlines Indians' GIBBY nominees
Reliever nominated for Setup Man of Year; Asdrubal for Walk-off
CLEVELAND -- Vinnie Pestano might one day be a closer in the big leagues. For the time being, the Indians' hard-throwing right-hander has settled in and established himself as one of the top setup men in the game.
Cleveland fans now have a chance to reward Pestano for his hard work.
The nominees for the 2012 Greatness in Baseball Years (GIBBY) Awards were unveiled on Thursday and Pestano is up for the Setup Man of the Year. Pestano headlines a short list of candidates for Cleveland in the many GIBBY categories.
Indians center fielder Michael Brantley is a nominee for the Top Play of 2012 for his incredible catch on May 26, when he reached over the center-field wall at U.S. Cellular Field to rob Alex Rios of a three-run home run. Tribe shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is a candidate for the best Walk-off of the season: launching a two-run homer off closer Aroldis Chapman in the 10th inning on June 19.
Many of Major League Baseball's A-listers will take home 2012 GIBBYs trophies -- an ultimate honor within the sport's awards season -- based on votes by media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni, fans at MLB.com and the Society for American Baseball Research.
This year's GIBBY Awards feature nominees in 21 categories. Individual honors will go to the MLB MVP, in addition to the year's best starting pitcher, hitter, closer, setup man, rookie, breakout hitter, breakout pitcher, comeback player, defensive player, manager, executive and postseason performer.
GIBBY trophies also will be awarded for the year's top play, storyline, hitting performance, pitching performance, oddity, walk-off, Cut4 topic and postseason moment, from MLB.com's "Must C" highlight reels.
In the past four years, fans have cast more than 40 million votes across the various GIBBYs categories, none of which were restricted to individual league affiliation.
Fans can vote as many times as desired until balloting closes at 11:59 p.m. ET on Dec. 2.
Winners will be presented their GIBBY trophies at the MLB.com Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards extravaganza during the Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tenn., on Dec. 4.
Over the past two years, Pestano has emerged as a leader within Cleveland's solid bullpen. This past season, the right-hander set a single-season franchise record with 36 holds, which ranked second in the Majors. Pestano ended the year 3-3 with a 2.57 ERA in 70 appearances, during which he struck out 76 hitters over 70 innings.
