Red Sox activate OF Carl Crawford from 60-day DL; designate INF/OF Brent Lillibridge for assignment
BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today activated outfielder Carl Crawford from the 60-day disabled list and designated infielder/outfielder Brent Lillibridge for assignment. Crawford is slated to start in left field and bat second tonight against the White Sox at Fenway Park.
The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.
Crawford, 30, began the season on the 15-day disabled list while recovering from left wrist surgery and was transferred to the 60-day DL on May 3. The left-handed batter hit a combined .306 (11-for-36) with six runs, a double, triple, two RBI, eight walks and two stolen bases in 11 rehab games overall between the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Red Sox, Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket. He was removed from his initial rehabilitation stint on July 7 due to a mild left groin strain before beginning a second stint with the PawSox from July 12-14, going 4-for-12 (.333) in three games in that time. A four-time American League All-Star who was signed by the Red Sox as a free agent in December of 2010, Crawford is a career .293 hitter (1,609-for-5,498) with 244 doubles, 112 triples, 115 homers, 648 RBI, 830 runs scored and 427 stolen bases in 1,365 Major League games with Tampa Bay (2002-10) and Boston (2011). He appeared in 130 games with the Red Sox last season and hit .255 (129-for-506) with 29 doubles, a team-high seven triples, 11 home runs, 56 RBI, 65 runs and 18 stolen bases.
Lillibridge, 28, was acquired by Boston from the White Sox on June 24 and has appeared in 10 games with the Red Sox, seeing action in right field, center field and first base while going 2-for-16 at the plate. He’s played in a combined 59 games with Chicago and Boston this season, making appearances at first base (22 games, 3 starts) and third base (6 G, 6 GS), and left (16 G, 2 GS), right (4 G, 1 GS) and center field (8 G, 5 GS). The right-handed batter has gone 13-for-79 (.165) overall with a double, two RBI, 10 runs, four walks and seven stolen bases. Originally selected by the Pirates in the fourth round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, Lillibridge has appeared in 295 Major League games over the last five seasons with the Braves (2008), White Sox (2009-12) and Red Sox (2012), hitting .212 (114-for-538) with 19 doubles, four triples, 16 home runs, 58 RBI, 85 runs, 41 walks and 30 stolen bases.
