SEATTLE -- Mariners fans need to get out the vote if third baseman Kyle Seager and Ichiro Suzuki are going to make any headway in the All-Star balloting for next month's Midsummer Classic in Kansas City.
Seager is not among the top five vote-getters at third base in the latest American League balloting totals released Monday by Major League Baseball, despite ranking second to Detroit's Miguel Cabrera in RBIs among the top candidates at the position.
Ichiro remains as the only Mariners position player currently among the leading vote-getters. He's 10th among outfielders, where the top 15 are listed. Only the top five are listed at the other positions.
Seager, 24, is having the best season among Seattle's position players to date, leading the team with a .273 batting average, 38 RBIs and an .813 OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage). He leads the AL in two-out RBIs with 24 and hit his eighth home run of the season on Sunday.
Adrian Beltre of the Rangers currently leads the third-base balloting with 1,634,057 votes, with Cabrera second at 1,313,063. Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria is third, followed by Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees and Mike Moustakas of the Royals.
The Rangers have five players currently in position to land starting spots in the voting: Beltre, catcher Mike Napoli, second baseman Ian Kinsler and outfielders Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz. The other current leaders are shortstop Derek Jeter and outfielder Curtis Granderson of the Yankees, first baseman Prince Fielder of the Tigers and designated hitter David Ortiz of the Red Sox.
