Rays designate right-hander Salas
Move is to make room for left-hander Shouse on 40-man roster
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The Rays designated right-hander Juan Salas for assignment on Thursday to make room on the 40-man roster for recently signed left-hander Brian Shouse.
Salas, 30, spent most of the 2008 season with Triple-A Durham and had two stints with the Rays, making five total appearances after missing Spring Training with visa issues in his native Dominican Republic; he did not report until April 17.
In 28 games with Durham, Salas went 4-5 with a 2.62 ERA and one save. He went 0-0 with a 7.11 ERA with Tampa Bay.
Meanwhile, the Rays announced that Shouse's deal calls for him to make $1.35 million in 2009 and Tampa Bay holds an option for '10 that would pay the veteran left-hander $1.9 million, or it can exercise a buyout for $200,000.
