ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays announced their roster for the World Series and, as expected, they stayed with the same roster they went with in the American League Championship Series.

Once again, the roster has 11 pitchers and 14 position players.

Not having enough arms in the event of a pitching catastrophe in a seven-game series remained the overriding reason for going with 11 pitchers.

"The thing that's a concern is that you have that one bad game and you have to use people you don't want to use in that one bad game," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "The days off help you, but if the bad game happens on the first day and then there's another game before a day off, that could still screw you up in regard to winning the next day. So I think it's important that you're covered. Especially pitching wise in a seven-game series."

Also weighing in favor of keeping 11 pitchers is that many of the Rays' hitters are switch-hitters, which would lessen the need for pinch-hitters throughout the series.

The composition of the Rays' roster will be as follows:

Starters: Matt Garza, Scott Kazmir, James Shields and Andy Sonnanstine

Bullpen: Grant Balfour, Chad Bradford, J.P. Howell, Edwin Jackson, Trever Miller, David Price and Dan Wheeler

Catchers: Michel Hernandez and Dioner Navarro

Infielders: Willy Aybar, Jason Bartlett, Akinori Iwamura, Evan Longoria, Carlos Pena and Ben Zobrist

Outfielders: Rocco Baldelli, Carl Crawford, Gabe Gross, Fernando Perez, and B.J. Upton
