Pirates at the plate: Michael Ryan led off the fourth with a double. One out later, Jose Bautista doubled him home for his eighth RBI of the spring. Nate McLouth had an RBI single in the fifth.

Rays at the plate: Greg Norton and Delmon Young had first inning RBIs to put the Rays up 2-0. Carl Crawford stole his sixth base of the spring in six attempts. Akinori Iwamura had an RBI double in the sixth in which he showed his speed to get the extra base.

Pirates on the mound: Left-hander Tom Gorzelanny made his second start, and fourth appearance, of the spring and allowed two runs on five hits in four innings worked.

Rays on the mound: James Shields allowed two runs on eight hits during a five-inning stint in which he struck out four and did not issue a walk. Bullpen hopefuls Dan Miceli, Al Reyes and Jeff Ridgway each pitched a scoreless inning.

Grapefruit League records: Pirates 6-10-1; Rays 2-14.

Up next: The Rays will host the Indians Saturday afternoon in a 1:05 p.m. ET contest at Progress Energy Park. Casey Fossum will make his second start of the spring after having a successful one-inning stint Monday against the Tigers; the left-hander is coming back from shoulder surgery. Tim Corcoran will follow Fossum and the right-hander hopes to further his case for becoming the team's No. 5 starter. Right-hander Brian Stokes is also scheduled to pitch for the Rays. Right-hander Fausto Carmona will start for the Indians. The Pirates will host the Twins in a 1:05 p.m. ET contest in Bradenton. Right-hander Tony Armas Jr. is expected to start for the Pirates against Twins right-hander Boof Bonser.
