CHC@PHI: Worley holds Cubs to one run over seven

In the wake of a series opener in which the Orioles and Phillies combined for 15 runs, Saturday's starters enter with a lot to prove.

For Philadelphia's Vance Worley, Saturday is a chance to show that he's back and fully healthy after spending three weeks on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation and a bone chip.

For Baltimore's Tommy Hunter, who was added to the 25-man roster just prior to game time, Saturday is an opportunity to prove he deserves to stay with the Major League club.

Worley last pitched Monday -- his first start since coming off the DL -- and allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts in only four innings and 80 pitches.

After the game, Worley said he felt good, a strong sign for the 24-year-old looking to build on a 3-2 start and 3.38 ERA.

"It's nice knowing that there's nothing in there that's going to bother me, and I've just got to go out there and pitch," Worley said.

Hunter is in the midst of a stretch of six straight Major League starts without a win, a streak that dates back to April 24.

In that span he's been demoted to Triple-A Norfolk twice, most recently following a loss at Toronto on May 28 in which he gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits in three innings.

"It's a really rough stretch," Hunter said postgame. "As soon as I can figure out how to throw a fastball down in the zone, things are going to change. It's a battle right now. I'm struggling. It's one of those things, you've got to find it, or somebody else is going to do it."

With the Orioles in need of a fifth starter for the first time since his last outing, Hunter will return to the rotation and have a chance to right the ship.

Phillies: Pierre hits milestone
• Left fielder Juan Pierre scored his 1,000th career run after hitting a second-inning triple on Friday.

In doing so, Pierre became only the 30th player in Major League history to have 1,000 runs, 2,000 hits and 500 stolen bases.

• Shane Victorino tied a career high with five RBIs Friday, finishing a triple shy of the cycle.

Orioles: Bullpen dominance
• Baltimore's bullpen threw five scoreless innings Friday night to lower its ERA to an American League-best 2.43.

Dana Eveland threw three scoreless frames before Kevin Gregg and Luis Ayala added one, slowing a Phillies offense that put up nine runs in four innings against Baltimore starter Jake Arrieta.

• Adam Jones went 0-for-4 on Friday, extending his hitless streak to a season-long 14 at-bats.

Jones, who is nursing contusions on both hands and wrists and had ice wrapped around his left wrist after Friday's game, leads the O's in hits (69), runs (39), home runs (16), RBIs (35) and stolen bases (nine).

Worth noting
• Philadelphia improved to 13-5 in its last 18 road games with Friday's win. The Phillies have also won nine of their last 11 road tilts. With the loss, Baltimore dropped to 14-14 at home.
